As 2023 comes to an end, the board, staff and non-resident fellows of the Institute of the Americas (IOA) have much to be grateful for and celebrate.  In our first full year of post-COVID operations, IOA organized 17 convenings that included the participation of over 1,200 representatives from the public and private sectors as well as civil society and academia. We hosted events here in California, in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico as well as our annual energy conferences in La Jolla and Madrid.

During 2023, IOA forged important strategic alliances. Our partnership with CAF-Development Bank of Latin America sets forth an ambitious scope of work focused on energy transition, environment & climate change and e-mobility & sustainable transportation solutions.   In partnership with ICLEI and Resilient Cities Catalyst (RCC), IOA was selected to co-manage the U.S. State Department’s (DOS) Cities Forward program providing sustainability-focused technical assistance to twelve municipalities across Latin America & the Caribbean.  IOA also formalized a Diplomatic Fellowship Program with the DOS. August saw the arrival of our first Diplomatic Fellow, Shane Christensen, for a yearlong posting.

IOA continued its thought leadership this past year. IOA team members authored or co-authored 16 issue papers and research publications on issues ranging from energy transition, green taxonomy, sustainable shipping, the economic value of marine protected areas and nearshoring.

In the coming year, IOA has plans for several programs that will address emerging issues and challenges across the Western Hemisphere.  Argentina’s energy outlook given political and economic changes will be in focus as will the myriad issues at stake in the upcoming election in Mexico. IOA’s work on sustainable maritime transport in the Californias will continue along with a deeper dive into emerging nearshoring opportunities for the Cali-Baja region. Brazil’s role as host nation for the G-20 in 2024 will also be crucial.

We look forward to your participation in future IOA programs.

Wishing you a joyful holiday season, we thank you for your continued support, and may the coming year bring you prosperity and well-being.
