Necessary Alliances and Geopolitics:  Learning from History to Understand the U.S-Mexico Relationship

The relationship between the United States and Mexico has been rich and complex over time. From the time of colonization to the present and including the Monroe Doctrine era, both countries have maintained a relationship influenced by multiple factors: political, economic, cultural as well as immigration.

With the recent election of Mexico’s incumbent President, Claudia Sheinbaum, and the upcoming elections in the United States, it is necessary to explore the historical parallels of the United States and Mexico with some very similar examples from past centuries.

From ancient Rome to the eras when the Spanish and British Empires were predominant world powers and then including the time of both World Wars of the 20 th century, Andreu Garcia will critically examine lessons learned from the past and what they can teach us about emerging challenges and opportunities in the U.S.-Mexico bilateral relationship.

The Institute of the Americas is pleased to invite you to attend a lecture on Thursday, August 22 nd from 3:30-5:00 pm, featuring Andreu García, the Spanish geopolitical historian.

The lecture will be presented in Spanish and will include simultaneous interpretation to English.
