February Energy Panorama 2023
Welcome to the February edition of Energy Panorama.
We ended the month in Mexico City where we hosted a Steering Committee breakfast meeting and heard from special guest Jorge Inzunza, Chairman of the Economic Commission of the Mexican Lower House of Congress. He shared candid insights on the economic and political landscape in Mexico as the election cycle heats up – first in the State of Mexico this June and next year’s presidential race.
Plans continue apace for the Madrid Energy Conference on April 18-20. Our agenda and speaker confirmations underscore the conference’s mission: Where Europe and Latin America meet for energy dialogue. Moreover, we are on track to reach our goal of gender equality in our agenda and speaker roster.
Non-Resident Fellow, Cecilia Aguillon, shared insights gained from our research and analysis of energy poverty in Baja California as a panelist in the virtual session “Identity and Energy Poverty: The Different Faces of Vulnerability.”
Non-Resident Fellow Leonardo Beltran was a featured panelist and speaker at the Spanish International Renewable Energy Conference (SPIREC) 2023 in Madrid, where he shared insights on renewables and decarbonization as part of the Clean Energy Ministerial process and work.
Jeremy Martin was featured in the IDB’s publication “10 Voices from Energy Week,” reflections from OLADE Energy Week in December in Panama City. He was also quoted in a Wall Street Journal article discussing the ongoing environmental issues and challenges in Venezuela derived from mismanagement of the oil sector.
Published at the beginning of February, Jeremy Martin, together with GPS second-year student, William Lozano-Arciniega, contributed “US-Mexico Natural Gas and LNG Collaboration” to the Winter 2023 edition of Wilson Quarterly.
Mark your calendar to join our March 10 webinar “Testing Resiliency – Latin America and the Caribbean Energy Outlook” featuring a presentation by Sproule experts Chris Mylde and Jorge Milanese and followed by a panel discussion with Carla Lacerda, Institute of the Americas Non-Resident Fellow and former ExxonMobil Brazil Country Chair and Jeremy Martin.
