Energy & Sustainability Program – Q1 2023

Mar 27, 2023 | Energy

We began 2023 with our traditional start-of-the-year compilation of essays prepared by our Non-Resident Fellows. The 2023 Energy Landscape and Outlook  report sets forth a high-level overview and insights.

January also featured a new chapter and avenue of engagement with our neighbors at the University of California San Diego School of Global Policy & Strategy (GPS). In a virtual meeting with our Non-Resident Fellows and several GPS graduate students, we convened a discussion around the future of the energy sector not just in Latin America, but globally. We are also pleased to count on having five GPS students with us in Madrid to attend and serve as rapporteurs for the conference and report.

Published at the beginning of February, Jeremy Martin, together with GPS second-year student, William Lozano-Arciniega, contributed “US-Mexico Natural Gas and LNG Collaboration” to the Winter 2023 edition of Wilson Quarterly.

In late February, we hosted a Steering Committee breakfast meeting in Mexico City and heard from special guest Jorge Inzunza, Chairman of the Economic Commission of the Mexican Lower House of Congress. He shared candid insights on the economic and political landscape in Mexico as the election cycle heats up – first in the State of Mexico this June and next year’s presidential race.

Jeremy Martin was featured in the IDB’s publication “10 Voices from Energy Week,” reflections from OLADE Energy Week in December in Panama City.  He was also quoted in a Wall Street Journal article discussing the ongoing environmental issues and challenges in Venezuela derived from mismanagement of the oil sector.

On March 10, we co-hosted a webinar “Testing Resiliency – Latin America and the Caribbean Energy Outlook.” The webinar, on publication of Sproule’s annual outlook report featured a presentation by Chris Mylde and Jorge Milanese from Sproule followed by a panel discussion with Carla Lacerda, Institute of the Americas Non-Resident Fellow and former ExxonMobil Brazil Country Chair and Jeremy Martin.

Be sure to mark your calendars to join us in Spain for the 4th annual Madrid Energy Conference on April 18-20 and stay tuned for news about an event in Brazil, as well as Argentina and, of course the La Jolla Conference set for October 11-12.
