How can collaboration between governments, maritime and logistics companies, ports, and communities create an interdisciplinary approach to reduce the industry’s ecological and carbon footprint in the Baja California Peninsula? Join the IOA and partners at the 1st Binational Forum on Sustainable Maritime Transport & Ports in the 3 Californias to support these efforts.
Given increasing global climate action pressures and imperative decarbonization efforts led by the International Maritime Organization, this convening aims to bring together key stakeholders in the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico and California in the US, to catalyze concrete actions towards more sustainable shipping and ports. In the long-run, we aim the region to establish a green marine corridor that supports net zero shipping operations.
The Road to Regional Competitiveness
Shipping supports almost 90% of global trade, yet greenhouse gas emissions from the sector are expected to grow between 90-150% by mid-century if unchecked. Given global trends towards a low carbon economy and a just energy transition, sustainability will inevitably become a cornerstone of the industry’s competitiveness—most certainly of ports.
In this context, the convening will consist of a series of roundtable discussions and deep dives centered around key maritime sustainability issues—with the objective of promoting knowledge sharing and cross-sectoral dialogue around standards and regulations, scientific and technological advances, and garnering support for private sector commitments. The latter are part of the recently-launched initiative by the event co-hosts on Mexico’s Champions for a Sustainable Shipping. The details can be found in Spanish here.
